HiroshimaToday was a heavy day. I got to go to Hiroshima Peace Park with the MasAki family, Cateline, Maito and Junko. We started at the A-Bomb Dome, this building was able to withstand the bomb and keep most of it structure. Something I found interesting about this dome is that the people of Hiroshima were torn after the bombing. Half of the population wanted to get rid of the building completely to not be reminded of that terrible day in August. The other half of the population wanted to keep it to represent how horrific and destructive these weapons can be and how as a world we need to get rid of them for good. What was so amazing to learn is that kids made the final decision!
As we continued around the park we stopped at many places that hold such power and sadness. It was a lot to take in.
After hearing from a truly beautiful survivor (who so sweetly memorized her presentation in English) we made our way to the Children’s Peace Monument where I was able to present 1000 thousands paper cranes, made by Lawrence students, to Sadako!
